I and You: The Musical, (World Premiere at McCarter Theatre Center in Fall 2025) takes all the spark, zeal, passion and poetry of the acclaimed two-hander and translates, augments and deepens the story into a world premiere new musical. With music and lyrics by Ari Afsar and book by Lauren Gunderson, the musical will retain all that has made the play beloved (and produced in every state in the nation), but will enrich the characters with a contemporary Broadway/pop/jazz sound that both captures the angst and desire of these two teenagers and also the scope and awe of Walt Whitman’s iconic poetry. The end of the play always blows people away with a twist that has made audiences gasp across the world. The end of this new musical will do the same but with an even grander emotional punch that only music can unleash.
